Tenney Environmental Ships Custom Walk-In Chamber to the Defense Industry
Tenney Environmental, a division of Thermal Product Solutions, announced the shipment of a Tenney Environmental Walk-In Chamber to the defense industry. The chamber will be used for thermal cycling of steel parts prior to a radiographic x-ray analysis to check for defects. The chamber features a solid construction rated for outdoor installation, independent from the customer’s main facility.
The walk-in environmental chamber has an operating temperature range of -85°F to 200°F and the capacity to process 9,000 lbs. of parts per load. The interior dimensions are 18’ W x 12’ D x 10’ H and the chamber was fully assembled and tested onsite at the factory, then shipped in two (2) halves to be welded together at the customer’s facility.
The temperature of the chamber is controlled by a Watlow F4T with INTUITION process controller that includes data logging and trend charts. A cryogenic carbon dioxide (CO2) cooling system uses direct injection into the chamber’s conditioning plenum to safely and rapidly cycle from 200°F to -85°F. The CO2 cooling system is interlocked with the automatic door locks to prevent entry during operation and mitigate the risk of releasing flammable gases and vapors before the chamber has been properly ventilated.
The thermal cycling chamber construction is intrinsically safe to eliminate all sources of ignition from inside the chamber. This type of construction is spark resistant with intrinsic safety barriers to isolate all wiring that enters the work chamber and employs temperature limited sheathed heating elements and pressure relief panels in the instance of an event within the chamber. Explosion-proof lighting fixtures were also utilized inside the chamber.
“This walk-in environmental chamber is designed with an intrinsically safe chamber interior that utilizes a direct injection CO2 cooling system so the chamber can safely and rapidly cycle from 200°F to -85°F. Tenney offers a comprehensive line of standard and custom chambers, so our team is able to work with customers to accommodate a range of configurations and product testing needs.”
